Every Saturday every summer, MoMA PS1 presents Warm Up, an event series taking place in their enormous courtyard. The museum—MoMA’s longstanding sister site in Long Island City, Queens—is a lightning rod for new and exciting artists, and each week’s performers inhabit a similar space in the music world. As a warm up to Warm Up, FADER and MoMA PS1 will be posting an exclusive mix from one of the upcoming week's artists. Today we've got Juan Atkins, the Detroit techno legend who literally invented the genre. (!!!!) He'll play this Saturday, June 29th, along with a trio of European techno heads: Lee Gamble, NHK’Koyxen and Bill Kouligas. What is your favorite summer jam right now? I would say "Treehouse" by Borderland [Atkins' new group with longtime collaborator Moritz von Oswald].
What's the best summer vacation you ever took? California when I was in junior high school, when I was very young. Going to Hollywood was probably the best vacation I could have.
Who is a visual artist that you admire, and why? That's a hard one. I think for visuals, I like Kraftwerk—they're more musical, but their visuals are very interesting. That's one of the groups now that I think that set the trend for what's to come in visuals with music.
What's your favorite summertime snack, and where do you get it? Probably Dairy Queen soft serve vanilla ice cream, dipped in chocolate with nuts.
