[foundsound-19]
miskate
drillbit ep
release
date: december 2
|
|
foundsound’s
own cofounder, a shy and beautiful american supergirl known as miskate, returns
with a fresh, new twist on her buggy trademark sound. plus,
argentina’s barem
of foundsound
and minus fame dishes out a minimal tech-house bomb that is an
emotively mesmerizing remix.
now with more than 15 records on labels like karloff, einmaleins,
microcosm, alphahouse, roman photo, wit and foundsound, drillbit ep
might be miskate’s
strongest release to date. miskate
proves to have an amazing ability to take only a few significant
samples -- whether it’s a field recording or her own voice --
along with simple groovy rhythms, and spawn irresistible works-of-art
that djs can appreciate. ranging form loopy dancefloor mayhem to deeply
emotional abstractionism, miskate’s
drillbit
ep is powerfully enticing.
on a1 – “drillbit”
-- you get a loopy dancefloor gem shaped by tribally bongos, a bouncy
bassline and a driving tech-house beat -- meanwhile all being
relentlessly overshadowed by the melodic snarling and roaring of an
electric drill. during the riveting breakdown, the intense wailing of
the drill pleasurably cuts through your body while forcing your hands
happily into the air.
on a2 – “what
you want” -- she goes deep and groovy with her
own oddly pitched vocals, a captivating bassline and pleasantly
haunting atmospherics -- moving with a sort of villalobos-like
structure along with profound emotions captured in the melodies of her
voice, both melancholy and blissful at the same time.
on b1 – “what
you want (barem remix)” -- the minus superkid
delivers a tech-house long-play fueled by bongo drums, miskate’s
stirring vocals and a climactic breakdown that’ll make
audiences rejoice on the dancefloor.
so c’mon boys and girls! take yourself and your audience on a
tripped-out joyride through the wondrous worlds of miskate and barem! yay!

brace yourself for somethin' oh-so-jazzy, boys and
girls. our italian pal kriss
joins the unfoundsound
family by dishin' out a five-track chef-d'œuvre entitled no.mad e.p.
- where you get pleasantly clobbered by a dancefloor amalgamation of
funky techno, organic jazz, groovy house and sampladelic ingenuity.
prior to this ep's release, a few of these tracks have already been
played regularly by djs like guido schneider, someone else, barem and
mauro picotto. that said, all five tracks are dancefloor killers - each
in its own jazzy or driving way. so listen up, djs! download these bad
boys and play and play and play - until your techno-colons fall out and
your pubic hairs light on fire.

foundsound
returns with another brain-blurring gem courtesy of
baltimore’s ben
parris, shrewdly titled from rave to
the grave – featuring remixes by matmos (real names drew daniel and martin schmidt). and
for those of you oddly unfamiliar with matmos, shame on
you! maybe you know the duo for playing alongside björk, or
for their countless albums on matador and other labels. or maybe you
know drew daniel
as the soft pink truth
on herbert’s soundslike label. their list of accomplishments
goes on and on.
on from
rave to the grave, you get four tracks on vinyl, plus a
fifth digital bonus remix. and this time around, ben parris delves
deeper into his own trademark off-kilter sequencing and subtle
dexterity – fed by quirky samples, trip-trailing delays,
wavering textures, organic drums, subtle climaxes, and a keen focus on
abstract structure with a calculated groove that djs can appreciate.
furthermore, reviving an old tradition from the '80s, the tracks
“wellsmellingyesterday” and
“schmurtisstrasse” are offered in two
different versions each, the ‘12” edits’
on the vinyl, and the longer digital versions that will better fit the
needs of today's digital dj.
> on a1 – “wellsmellingyesterday”
– you get super-druggy, bubbly, bouncy minimal house that
gurgles and wobbles.
> on a2 – “schmurtisstrasse”
– you take a funky-ass safari ride through a twisted,
jungle-like house jam that’ll make you bust out dance moves
that you never knew you had before.
> on b1 – “yo no ronco”
– you have a deep, stompy, slightly tribal, pleasantly
haunting house number driven by conga drums, airy samples and dusty
organ stabs.
> on b2 – “yo no ronco (matmos’
bower of bliss mix)” – clunk your way
through a stripped-down minimal house groove and witty sound-play
reminiscent of herbert.
> as for the digital bonus track – “yo no ronco (matmos’
mutable mix)” – you get idm-ish broken
beats, chaotic percussion mayhem, and brilliantly funny disfigurations
of the original samples.

unfields goes to the gym
out now!
|
|
who knew the gym could be so much fun? from grunts
to counting reps, to
squeaky gym equipment, punching bags with chain rustling, and to the
almost naturally sounding digital reverb of the racquetball court, the
gym is quite the playground for field recording junkies!
the gym members didn't seem to mind that they were being used like
specimens for soundbites either. listen to them interact with me. some
of them even seemed to be star-struck with the idea that they would be
"on the internet."
hopefully these sounds will inspire you to get off your butt and away
from youtube for a minute to sweat a little and get healthy while
enjoying the beautiful sounds around you in real life. just make sure
you take a shower afterwards and wear your flip-flops in the gym locker
room. don't blame me if you get fungus on your feet!
n'joy, all you sound nerds!
